Renovación Popular seeks JNE ruling on Lima debate participation
The political party Renovación Popular has formally consulted the Jurado Nacional de Elecciones (JNE) regarding whether Rafael López Aliaga is eligible to participate in the upcoming municipal debates for Lima Metropolitana. This inquiry follows the irrevocable resignation of Luis Rubio Idrogo from his candidacy for mayor.
Because Rubio has withdrawn, the party seeks legal clarification on whether López Aliaga, who remains a candidate for first regidor (teniente alcalde), can represent the party during the debate sessions scheduled for September 21 and 22. The formal request was submitted by the party's legal representative, Fernando Sandoval Ruiz.
Carlos Vilela, the JNE's national director of education, stated that the decision on who represents a party in these debates rests with the political organizations themselves. The electoral body will coordinate through inter-institutional working groups, but the specific criteria for participation will be determined by the agreements reached between the participating political groups.
