Renovated Primary Health Centre Boosts Antenatal Care Uptake in Kaduna, Nigeria

The Sabon Tasha Primary Healthcare Centre in Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State was renovated, adding upgraded wards, better‑staffed clinics and a patient‑centred culture. The improvements have restored confidence in the primary health system, leading more pregnant women to attend antenatal care, choose skilled birth attendance, deliver in facilities and use family‑planning services, while routine infant immunisation rates have risen.

One first‑time mother, 24‑year‑old Maryam Ibrahim, described how fear of labour and negative stories about hospitals kept her away. After a health worker encouraged her to register at the renovated centre, she found clean, organised facilities and welcoming staff. Regular visits provided blood‑pressure checks, fetal monitoring, nutrition advice and education on danger signs, which gave her confidence to deliver at the centre when labour began. Her experience illustrates the broader shift in community trust and utilisation of maternal health services following the refurbishment.
