Renovation of Athens' Panathenaic Stadium Starts with New Track and Upgrades

The Hellenic Olympic Committee (E.O.E.) has launched the first major maintenance and upgrade programme for the historic Panathenaic Stadium in Athens. The initial phase replaces the worn‑out tartan track with a new German‑made surface in the colours of the Greek flag, certified by World Athletics for Diamond League competitions.

The work, fully funded by Capital Maritime & Trading Corp., owned by philanthropist Vangelis Marinas, will also include extensive cleaning of the marble from the Kalymmarro, installation of a modern lighting system, and other enhancements to improve conditions for athletes and spectators. E.O.E. President Isidoros Kouvelos said, “For the first time in history the Hellenic Olympic Committee is doing substantive work for the country with money from Greek benefactors… The upgrades aim to host Diamond League track events by 2027 and preserve the stadium’s cultural heritage.”
