Rep. Chuck Edwards censured by House over staffer misconduct
The U.S. House of Representatives voted 413-2 to censure Republican Representative Chuck Edwards of North Carolina following a House Ethics Committee investigation. The investigation concluded that Edwards engaged in “persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct” toward two young female staffers, creating a hostile work environment.
While the committee found no evidence of explicit sexual propositions or physical misconduct, it determined that Edwards’ behavior—which included making comments about the women’s appearance, sending late-night messages with romantic overtones, and providing lavish gifts such as jewelry, designer purses, and firearms—violated the “spirit” of the House’s sexual harassment prohibitions. The report noted that a reasonable observer would interpret his pattern of behavior as sexual or romantic in nature.
During the proceedings, Edwards was required to stand in the well of the House as Speaker Mike Johnson read the formal reprimand. Edwards has denied the allegations of sexual harassment, characterizing the interactions as an “affectionate friendship.” He has since ended his reelection bid.
