Prior to the vote, Edwards issued a letter to his House colleagues requesting they reconsider the censure recommendation. He argued the committee made an “extraordinary analytical leap” by labeling his actions as sexual harassment, maintaining that his gifts, poetry, and compliments were merely expressions of “affectionate friendship.”

Edwards, who has already withdrawn from his 2024 reelection campaign, continues to deny allegations of sexual misconduct.
