Rep. Chuck Edwards Faces House Censure Over Staff Harassment

The bipartisan House Ethics Committee released a 20‑page report on August 3, 2026 concluding that Rep. Chuck Edwards (R‑NC) violated the House Code of Official Conduct by engaging in “persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct” toward two young female staffers. Investigators detailed a pattern of lavish gifts—including jewelry worth over $1,000, designer handbags, firearms, shoes, a KitchenAid mixer, and travel expenses—personal notes, late‑night texts, and comments on the women’s appearance and weight. While the committee found no evidence that Edwards propositioned the staffers or engaged in sexual activity, it determined that his behavior would reasonably be interpreted as sexual harassment and created a hostile work environment.

The panel recommended that the full House formally censure Edwards, the strongest disciplinary action short of expulsion. Because the House is in summer recess, a vote is expected after members return in September. Edwards has denied any romantic intent, saying he understood the rules on sexual harassment, and his office has criticized the investigation as overreaching.
