Repatriation of Bosnian mountaineers delayed in Russia

The repatriation of five Bosnian mountaineers who died on Mount Elbrus in Russia is facing delays due to banking difficulties. The bodies remain in Moscow while authorities await confirmation of payment from a Russian bank to secure an aircraft for transport.

Kenan Hrustanović, head of the Mountain Rescue Service (GSS) Zenica, stated that the transfer of funds is complicated by international sanctions against Russia. The Government of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina has allocated 70,000 KM for these efforts. The planned logistics involve flying the remains from Moscow to Belgrade, followed by land transport to Zenica.

The tragedy occurred in late July when a group of seven climbers encountered sudden, severe weather conditions during their ascent of Russia's highest peak. While two members of the expedition survived, five others—including two members of GSS Zenica and three from the Vedro Mountaineering Society—perished. Although the vehicles and equipment of the deceased have already been returned to Bosnia and Herzegovina, the families continue to wait for the return of their loved ones.
