Muammer Karaca Theater reopens in Istanbul after 14 years

The historic Muammer Karaca Theater in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, has reopened to the public following a comprehensive restoration project led by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) and İBB Miras. The theater had been closed since 2012.

The restoration, which began in 2019, aimed to preserve the building's original character while updating its technical infrastructure. During the process, workers discovered historical remains of a former French Court building beneath the site, allowing for the integration of these architectural elements into the complex. The renovated facility now includes a 300-seat main stage, rehearsal areas, workshops, and a “Theater House” created from a converted 19th-century masonry section.

The reopening ceremony featured performances of “Deli Dumrul” and “Keşanlı Ali Destanı,” as well as an exhibition titled “Mengü Ertel’in Tiyatro Evreni,” which showcases the artist's contributions to modern Turkish theater. The venue is intended to serve as a multi-functional cultural platform, supporting independent theaters, international performances, and various artistic workshops.
