Restoration and reopening of Muammer Karaca Theater
Overview
The Muammer Karaca Theater in Beyoğlu, Istanbul, has reopened to the public after being closed since 2012. The restoration project, led by the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality and İBB Miras, began in 2019 and focused on preserving the building’s original character while upgrading technical infrastructure. During the process, historical remains of a former French Court building were discovered and integrated into the complex.
The renovated venue features a 300-seat main stage, rehearsal areas, workshops, and a “Theater House” converted from a 19th-century masonry section. Following an opening ceremony featuring performances such as “Deli Dumrul” and “Keşanlı Ali Destanı,” the theater is set to serve as a multi-functional cultural platform for independent theater, international performances, and artistic workshops.
