Moldova and Romania report multiple drone incursions near Ukrainian border

Moldova and Romania have reported multiple drone incursions and airspace violations following Russian aerial attacks on Ukraine.

On August 22, a Shahed 138 (Geran-3) drone entered Moldovan airspace from Ukraine near Crutoiarovka, traveling through the Ștefan Vodă district before exiting near Caplani. The unauthorized flight lasted approximately 17 minutes. In a separate incident on August 24, another unidentified drone traversed southern Moldova for 14 minutes, moving from the Odesa region toward Vulcănești and eventually entering Romanian airspace near Vrancea county.

In response to these incidents, the Moldovan Ministry of Internal Affairs has implemented additional protection measures at border crossing points, including the construction of shelters and the relocation of fuel reserves. The Ukrainian Tabachi border crossing was temporarily suspended following a drone incident near the Mirnoe-Tabachi area.

On the Romanian side, the Ministry of National Defense scrambled two F-16 aircraft and an IAR-330 SOCAT helicopter to monitor intermittent radar signals detected in the Cahul region of Moldova and the Târgu Bujor area of Galați county. Authorities have issued RO-Alert messages to notify the local population of the potential threat.
