Winter driving regulations take effect in Austria and Bosnia and Herzegovina

New winter driving regulations and equipment requirements are set to take effect in several regions starting November 1.

In Austria, police have announced increased controls for the period between November 1 and April 15. For passenger cars and light commercial vehicles up to 3.5 tons, winter tires are mandatory during winter conditions such as snow, slush, or ice. Alternatively, snow chains may be used on at least two drive wheels if the road is almost entirely covered in snow or ice. Heavy vehicles over 3.5 tons must carry winter tires on at least the drive axles and have snow chains on board. Buses with more than eight seats face specific requirements through March 15, with chain requirements lasting until April 15.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, the mandatory period for winter equipment runs from November 1 to April 1. Unlike the situational requirement in Austria, the obligation in Bosnia and Herzegovina applies throughout the entire period regardless of current weather conditions. Drivers can comply by using winter tires on all wheels, or a combination of winter tires on drive wheels plus snow chains. It is also permitted to use summer tires with a tread depth of at least four millimeters if accompanied by snow chains or traction devices on at least two drive wheels. Failure to comply in Bosnia and Herzegovina can result in a 40 KM fine and potential removal of the vehicle from traffic.
