Republika Srpska winter vehicle safety preparations

Overview

Tire service centers across Republika Srpska, particularly in cities like Banja Luka, have faced high demand and long wait times as drivers transition from summer to winter tires. Service providers reported being fully booked for several days, with experts warning that driving on summer tires in temperatures below 7°C increases risks such as longer braking distances and reduced grip.

To address seasonal safety, winter equipment will be mandatory for vehicles in Republika Srpska from November 1 until April 1, 2027. Requirements include winter tires on all wheels, or winter tires on drive wheels paired with snow chains. Alternatively, summer tires with a minimum tread depth of four millimeters may be used if combined with snow chains or other traction-enhancing devices.

The Auto-Moto Association (AMS) is supporting these safety measures through a preventive initiative titled ‘Safe Driving in Winter Conditions 2026’. From October 30 to November 20, the association will offer free vehicle inspections to check essential components, including tire tread depth, brake fluid, lighting, windshield wipers, and battery charge.
