Macedonian fraudsters jailed for swindling €32,540 from 80‑year‑old in Split

Two citizens of North Macedonia were arrested by the Split‑Dalmatia Police Department for deceiving an 80‑year‑old woman in Split. The suspects called the victim, claiming that her daughter needed urgent surgery after a broken leg, and instructed her to hand over the cash to a man who would visit her home. Under pressure, the woman handed over more than €30,000. Police placed the man under surveillance, coordinated with colleagues from the Zadar police, and detained the pair in Zadar. A search of their residence recovered the full €32,540, which was returned to the victim. The investigation established probable cause for fraud, and the suspects were transferred to the prison watch. Authorities warned the public, especially senior citizens, to verify such urgent money‑request calls before handing over cash.
