Rescue of teenage boy after he dived into Lake Chitila to save friend
A 16‑year‑old girl slipped on the banks of Lake Chitila, near Bucharest, and fell into the deep water. A 15‑year‑old boy, who did not know how to swim, jumped in immediately to try to pull her to safety. The girl managed to swim to the shore and was taken by bystanders to medical care.
The boy remained unconscious in the lake. Divers from the Special Rescue Detachment spent about 40 minutes underwater before retrieving him. After resuscitation on site, he was transferred by a SMURD (Mobile Intensive Care Unit) helicopter to the Bucharest Clinical Emergency Hospital for further treatment. Both victims were stabilized after the operation. Police opened an investigation into the incident, noting that accidents have occurred previously at the lake.
