Overview

Romania’s mountain‑rescue services continued a busy period in late July 2026. On 25 July the Dâmbovița Salvamont‑Salvaspeo team, supported by SMURD helicopters, responded to three urgent cases: a 45‑year‑old woman with suspected mushroom poisoning, a 21‑year‑old woman with a dislocated lower‑limb injury, and an unconscious tourist on the Babele‑Peștera trail who later died despite resuscitation efforts. In the preceding 24 hours the national dispatch centre logged 23 emergency calls across Brașov, Cluj, Maramureș and other counties, rescuing 26 people (13 taken to hospitals) and handling 47 route‑advice requests. The team also maintained and marked trails in the Leaota area.

The same day crews located four hikers without headlamps in the Retezat Mountains, retrieved four tourists from an unmarked trail in Piatra Craiului National Park, and freed two exhausted Ukrainian citizens in the Maramureș highlands.

A maritime search off Sulina continued after two Indian crew members of the cargo ship AGN Ragnar jumped overboard fearing a drone attack. Romanian authorities deployed the SAR Apollo vessel, a Border Police boat and the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre to locate the missing sailors, while two other crew members were confirmed safe. The incident follows a recent Romanian Air Force F‑16 interception and downing of a suspect drone near Sulina, the third such event in 48 hours.
