85‑Year‑Old Swimmer Rescued After Missing Person Search at Austria’s Irrsee

On 5 July 2026, an 85‑year‑old woman who had been swimming at the Irrsee near Zell am Moos was reported missing by a friend. The fire department of Zell am Moos, water‑rescue units, the Austrian Red Cross and the police launched a coordinated search. Divers and a drone were deployed while a fire‑boat began searching the lake.

At the fire‑station’s boat house a passerby alerted the crew to a woman sitting on a wooden bench. Identity checks confirmed she was the missing swimmer. She had suffered a leg cramp while swimming, swam roughly 500 metres to a nearby pier and rescued herself. The rescue teams escorted her back to her friend in a fire‑engine, and she thanked the responders, joking that her long‑held wish of riding in a fire vehicle had been fulfilled.

The operation concluded quickly with all agencies withdrawing after the safe recovery of the elderly swimmer.
