Research examines sleep duration and skin aging processes

A scientific study involving over 23,000 adults has identified a statistical link between sleep duration and metabolic health. According to research published in BMJ Open Diabetes Research & Care, an average of 7 hours and 19 minutes of sleep was associated with optimal glucose utilization markers. The study, which utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, also noted that moderate sleep recovery on weekends may benefit metabolic indicators, though excessive differences between weekday and weekend sleep schedules may not be advantageous.

In a separate discussion regarding biological aging, research highlights how collagen production declines after age 40, affecting men and women differently. Women may experience a more rapid loss of collagen—up to 30% within the first five years of menopause—due to declining estrogen levels. Men typically possess thicker skin with more collagen, experiencing a more gradual structural weakening that often results in deeper wrinkles later in life. Factors such as UV radiation, smoking, and high sugar intake are noted to accelerate collagen breakdown.
