Research identifies two distinct waves of human aging
New research suggests that human aging does not occur at a constant rate but rather in distinct waves. A study led by computational biologist Sanju Sinha at the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute analyzed over 25,000 tissue samples from 970 individuals. The findings indicate that aging accelerates at two specific periods, typically in the late 30s and late 50s.
Different organs follow unique schedules. Blood vessels showed early signs of aging in the 30s, while female reproductive organs like the uterus remained stable until the menopause period in the 50s. Ovaries, however, exhibited two distinct acceleration periods between ages 35–40 and 55–60.
Complementary research from the Karolinska Institutet highlights the role of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations in tissue degradation. Researchers found that the accumulation of these mutations impairs mitochondrial function, specifically affecting the heart's ability to contract. This dysfunction triggers immune cell recruitment and increased fibrosis, creating an inflammatory response that further worsens tissue function and contributes to age-related diseases.
