Scientific research has identified that human biological aging occurs in non-linear, accelerated waves rather than at a constant rate.
Initial findings from the Sanford Burnham Prebys Medical Discovery Institute, involving the analysis of over 25,000 tissue samples, suggest aging accelerates during two specific periods, typically in the late 30s and late 50s. These waves vary by organ; for example, blood vessels show early signs of aging in the 30s, while female reproductive organs like the uterus remain stable until menopause. Additionally, research from the Karolinska Institutet linked tissue degradation to mitochondrial DNA mutations that impair organ function, such as the heart’s ability to contract.
Subsequent studies from Stanford University and Nanyang Technological University, published in Nature Aging, corroborated the non-linear nature of aging. These researchers identified specific biological inflection points at ages 44 and 60 by observing changes in RNA, proteins, and microbiomes. Professor Michael Snyder noted that the changes observed around age 60 correspond with an increased risk for conditions including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and neurodegeneration.
