Research links dysfunctional brain cells to age-related cognitive decline

New research suggests that dysfunctional myelin-producing cells, known as oligodendrocytes, may actively contribute to age-related cognitive decline. A study involving the Lothian Birth Cohort 1936, conducted by researchers from the University of Edinburgh and the UK Dementia Research Institute, found that individuals with more severe cognitive decline exhibited changes to nerve fibers and excess, unhealthy myelin. These findings challenge the traditional view that these cells are solely supportive of healthy brain function and suggest that targeting oligodendrocyte dysfunction could lead to new treatments for protecting cognition in later life.

In a related effort to understand brain activity in later life, Adelaide University is launching a research project to investigate how neural noise influences thinking and memory. The study will utilize non-invasive assessments, including electroencephalography (EEG) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), to study healthy adults aged 65 and older. Recruitment for this project is scheduled to begin in July 2026.
