Research reveals media stereotypes regarding Southern Italy

A research study titled “L’informazione (s)corretta: giornalismo e narrazione del Sud tra stereotipi e pregiudizi” has revealed significant biases in how Italian media portrays Southern Italy. The study, conducted by the Campania Journalists Union in collaboration with the University of Naples Federico II, the University of Italian Switzerland, and the European Journalism Observatory, analyzed 278 articles published between February and August 2020.

Findings indicate that 21% of the analyzed articles maintained a negative tone toward the Mezzogiorno, while 54% were neutral and 25% were positive. The research highlights a recurring narrative that associates the South with fragility, backwardness, inefficiency, and dependency, whereas the North is depicted through themes of productivity, innovation, and economic leadership.

The report warns of the “naturalization of the gap,” where journalists describe North-South differences as historical or geographical inevitabilities rather than the results of political and economic processes. Researchers emphasize that such media representations can reinforce social inequalities and shape public perception through seemingly neutral metaphors and associations.
