Media representation of Southern Italy

Research conducted by the Campania Journalists Union, in collaboration with several academic institutions, has identified significant media biases regarding Southern Italy. The study, titled “L’informazione (s)corretta: giornalismo e narrazione del Sud tra stereotipi e pregiudizi,” analyzed 278 articles from 2020. Findings showed that 21% of articles maintained a negative tone toward the Mezzogiorno, often associating the region with “fragility, backwardness, inefficiency, and dependency,” while the North was framed through themes of productivity and innovation. Researchers warned against the “naturalization of the gap,” where media portrayals treat regional differences as inevitable rather than political or economic outcomes.

In response to these findings and the need to address media ethics, professional training sessions have been organized for journalists. A seminar in Naples focuses on how journalistic narratives may perpetuate prejudices regarding the Mezzogiorno. Additionally, a session in Bologna titled “Raccontare le periferie” explores the role of journalism in portraying peripheral neighborhoods to combat educational poverty and social inequality.
