Researchers identify molecular mechanism behind age-related skin inflammation
Researchers have identified a molecular mechanism responsible for age-related skin inflammation. A study led by Dr. Guiomar Solanas and Dr. Salvador Aznar Benitah reveals that as skin ages, the interaction between two proteins, BMAL1 and YAP, changes. While these proteins normally collaborate to maintain epidermal homeostasis and cell identity, aging-related changes in skin stiffness cause them to concentrate in DNA regions that control inflammatory genes, thereby increasing their activity.
In addition to the molecular findings, dermatological guidance emphasizes the importance of recognizing signs of a weakened skin barrier, such as redness, tightness, and increased reactivity to external factors like pollution or temperature changes. To manage fragile skin, experts recommend using soothing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, ceramides, and panthenol, while avoiding harsh exfoliants and fragrances. Daily sun protection is also noted as essential for preserving skin integrity.
