Researchers identify OPA1 protein as key factor in fat intake and obesity

Researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University have identified a neural protein, OPA1, that significantly influences fat intake and weight gain. The study, published in the journal FASEB, focuses on OPA1's role in maintaining the function of mitochondria within neurons in the hypothalamus.

In experiments involving mice, the absence of OPA1 in neurons carrying the melanocortin 4 receptor (MC4R) led to a higher preference for dietary fats and more rapid weight gain. These effects were notably more pronounced in females. Nutritionist Shigenobu Matsumura noted that the findings provide insight into the mechanisms of obesity from the perspective of neural energy metabolism.

Complementary nutritional guidance suggests that managing hunger through specific food choices can also aid weight management. High-satiety foods—characterized by high fiber, protein, or water content—can help regulate appetite. Examples include oats, which contain beta-glucan to slow digestion, and eggs, which provide essential amino acids and protein to reduce hunger hormones.
