Massive Plastic Waste Fire Engulfs Swisttal Facility in Germany

A large fire broke out on the outdoor site of the Hündgen recycling company in Swisttal, North Rhine‑Westphalia, around 01:00 local time on 9 July 2026. Approximately 2,500 sqm of compressed plastic waste ignited, creating a kilometer‑long black smoke plume and intense heat that melted nearby hall cladding. The incident was classified as Alarm Level 4, prompting the deployment of more than 100 emergency personnel from the Rhein‑Sieg district and neighbouring fire services.

Firefighters established containment barriers, used radlader machines to break up and remove waste piles, and employed aerial drones for situational assessment. The Federal Office of Civil Protection issued a NINA‑app warning advising residents to close windows, doors, and ventilation systems due to potential health effects from the smoke. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the blaze remains under investigation. Firefighting operations are expected to continue into the later morning.
