Residential Fires in Gera and Trier Lead to Major Damage and Arson Probe

A house fire broke out in Gera‑Langenberg on the evening of 21 May around 20:45. Police say a 58‑year‑old homeowner was using a gas burner on the roof space when it ignited, destroying the roof, several rooms and a photovoltaic system. The damage is estimated in the high five‑figure range. The owner and his 57‑year‑old wife suffered light smoke‑inhalation injuries and were treated in hospital, while firefighters rescued two dogs from the blaze.

Later that week, a night‑time fire erupted in a flat on Anton‑Caspary‑Straße in Trier. Flames were seen shooting out of a first‑floor bedroom window, prompting the evacuation of occupants from the surrounding apartments. No one was injured. The fire, which lasted about two hours, rendered the specific flat uninhabitable but left the rest of the building intact. The cause remains under investigation by the criminal police.

Both incidents prompted sizable emergency‑services responses and have been handed over to criminal investigators for possible arson.
