Respiratory illnesses: distinguishing COVID-19, influenza, and colds

Health specialists are highlighting the similarities and differences between COVID-19, influenza, and the common cold as respiratory illness seasons approach. The World Health Organization (WHO) provides guidance on distinguishing these illnesses through symptoms: fever and difficulty breathing are more characteristic of COVID-19, while sneezing is a key indicator of a common cold. Fatigue and diarrhea are frequently associated with influenza.

In Yucatán, Mexico, immunologist Manuel Baeza Bacab has warned that the region is entering a period of increased contagion. Yucatán currently leads Mexico in influenza cases, accounting for an estimated 46% of the country's infections as of week 36. Data shows a 91% increase in cases compared to the same period last year, rising from 164 to 314 recorded infections.

Because symptoms overlap significantly, medical professionals emphasize that laboratory testing is the only way to ensure an accurate diagnosis, particularly for vulnerable individuals or those presenting moderate to severe symptoms.
