Respiratory virus increases in Mexico
Overview
Health specialists are advising on the distinctions between COVID-19, influenza, and the common cold as respiratory illness seasons approach. In Yucatán, Mexico, immunologist Manuel Baeza Bacab warned of an increased contagion period, noting that the region accounted for approximately 46% of Mexico’s influenza cases as of week 36, representing a 91% increase compared to the previous year.
As cases continue, Mexican health and education authorities have implemented preventive strategies in schools to curb viral spread. In Campeche, officials reported 31 confirmed cases of severe respiratory illness, including 18 COVID-19 cases and 13 influenza cases. Health Secretary Orlando Alvarado Rivadeneyra instructed school staff to serve as a first line of defense by identifying symptomatic students. Similar preventive protocols and sanitary recommendations were reinforced in Puebla following a confirmed COVID-19 case in a student.
