Retail sectors in Sweden and Norway show mixed economic trends

Retail sectors in Sweden and Norway are experiencing mixed or declining trends according to recent economic indicators. In Sweden, Svensk Handel reports a cautious recovery. While the future outlook for non-food retail improved slightly, rising to 94.9, the grocery and wholesale sectors saw declines. Sofia Larsen, CEO of Svensk Handel, noted that while household economic margins have improved slightly, it will take time for this to manifest in retail sales.

In Norway, Statistics Norway (SSB) reported a 0.7 percent decrease in seasonally adjusted retail turnover from June to July 2026. This decline was driven largely by a 2.8 percent drop in fuel sales and a 0.3 percent decrease in grocery retail. Conversely, internet commerce saw a 1.4 percent increase, and certain specialty stores, including pharmacies and clothing retailers, contributed to a slight upward trend in specific categories.
