Retail trends show shifting Father's Day spending in Australia and the US
Retail data from Australia and the United States reveals diverging trends in Father's Day consumer spending. In Australia, research from the Australian Retailers Association and Roy Morgan indicates that while fewer people are shopping, those who do are spending more per person. Total spending is expected to reach $720 million, a decrease of approximately $100 million from the previous year, but the average outlay per buyer has risen 44% to $145, reflecting a shift toward premium products and experiences.
Conversely, the United States is seeing record-breaking growth. According to the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics, Father's Day spending in the U.S. is projected to hit $27.9 billion, up from $24 billion last year. The average consumer spend in the U.S. is expected to be $226.58. While economic pressures persist, growth is projected across most categories except for those aged 65 and older. Popular gift items include greeting cards, clothing, and special outings, with significant interest in electronics, personal care, and subscription boxes.
