Retailers Asda, Alcampo, and Tesco adopt electronic shelf labels
Major European grocery retailers are implementing electronic shelf labels (ESLs) to modernise store operations and improve pricing accuracy.
In the United Kingdom, Asda has completed the rollout of 1.2 million electronic labels across its 517 Express stores. The £7.5 million investment aims to eliminate the need for manual paper label changes, allowing staff to focus more on customer service. The new system displays pricing, unit costs, weights, and promotional information, with some labels providing ingredient and allergen details.
In Spain, retailer Alcampo is deploying over 560,000 ESLs across 84 supermarkets in partnership with Hanshow. This initiative is expected to reduce paper consumption by approximately 1,843 km annually and decrease CO2 emissions by an estimated 8.4 tonnes per year.
Additionally, Tesco has announced plans to roll out electronic shelf labels across approximately 3,000 stores over the next two years in collaboration with Hanshow, following a proof of concept phase.
