Retailers expand pet specialty stores in Yamaguchi and Tokyo

Retailers are expanding specialized pet services in Japan. Aeon Pet will open the Petemo Onoda Sunpark store in Sanyo-Onoda, Yamaguchi Prefecture, on September 11. The new location will feature a variety of specialized sections, including the first introduction of the pet apparel shop-in-shop ‘WAN CLOSET’ in Yamaguchi, a cat-specific section called ‘NECOMO’, and a toy specialty area. The store will also offer fresh food, pet stroller rentals, and grooming services.

Separately, Joyful Honda plans to open its first standalone pet specialty store in Tokyo, named ‘Pet’s CLOVER Higashikurume Minamicho’, in December 2026. Located in Higashikurume, Tokyo, the store aims to promote responsible pet ownership through its ‘CLOVER STEP’ system. This initiative is designed to prevent impulsive purchases by requiring customers to undergo specific stages of preparation and mindset training before being allowed to take home a new dog or cat.
