Rethymno motorcycle accident kills 21-year-old dancer

A 21-year-old man, Angelos Peristeris, died following a head-on collision between his motorcycle and a taxi in Adeliano Kampo, Rethymno, on the night of August 19, 2026. Peristeris was returning home from work when the accident occurred.

Following the incident, a 61-year-old taxi driver was taken into custody. Judicial authorities ordered his temporary detention after reviewing evidence that suggests dangerous driving, supported by testimony from an eyewitness at the scene.

Peristeris, a talented traditional dancer and teacher with the 'Chorokrites' Folk Group, was honored during his funeral service at the Holy Church of Agios Tryphon in Pallini. Members of his dance group performed a traditional Cretan dance in his memory, while his former community at the 'Axiotheatron' Theater Association in Nea Makri also expressed their grief.
