Fatal motorcycle accident in Rethymno

Overview

On the night of August 19, 2026, 21-year-old Angelos Peristeris, a prominent traditional dancer and instructor for the ‘Chorokrites’ Folk Association, died following a head-on collision between his motorcycle and a taxi in the Adelian Kampo area of Rethymno. Peristeris was reportedly returning home from work at the time of the accident.

Following an investigation by the Rethymno Traffic Police and a review of evidence—including eyewitness testimony suggesting dangerous driving—a 61-year-old taxi driver was placed in provisional detention by judicial authorities.

Peristeris was honored during a funeral service at the Holy Church of Agios Tryfonas in Pallini, Attica. Members of the ‘Chorokrites’ association performed traditional Cretan dances in his memory, and grief was also expressed by the ‘Axiotheatron’ Theater Association in Nea Makri.
