Rfi executives under investigation in Brandizzo train tragedy probe

Two new executives from Rfi's Piedmont compartment have been placed under investigation by the Ivrea Prosecutor's Office regarding the Brandizzo train tragedy. The investigation follows the death of five workers on the Torino-Chivasso line on August 30-31, 2023.

The new developments stem from a Spresal inspection which revealed that Rfi's Risk Assessment Document (DVR) had not been updated or implemented according to prescribed timelines. The specific individuals under investigation include the infrastructure operations manager for Turin and the circulation manager for Rfi.

Evidence gathered during the inquiry, including audio and video recordings, suggests that workers were sent onto the tracks without absolute certainty that rail traffic had been suspended. One supervisor from the subcontractor Sigifer was recorded telling his team, “Guys, if I say train, jump aside.”
