Rheinmetall launches military air defense satellite with Argotec
Rheinmetall, in collaboration with the Italian aerospace company Argotec, has successfully launched its first satellite designed for military air defense. The satellite was deployed on October 1 via a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.
Rather than traditional mapping, the satellite is designed to detect ground-based indicators of aerial threats, such as missiles or drones, during their preparatory stages. This allows for earlier detection than ground-based radar, which typically identifies targets once they are already airborne. The system utilizes artificial intelligence to process image and positional data, feeding actionable intelligence into national air defense networks.
This project, led by Rheinmetall Italia, aims to secure funding for subsequent program phases. A second satellite is planned for launch in 2028, with the ultimate goal of establishing a full satellite constellation. While specific budgets and clients have not been disclosed, the initiative aligns with broader trends in integrating space-based sensors into decision-making channels for modern defense.
