Rheinmetall Secures €5.7 bn Romanian Weapons Deal Amid Russian Lawsuit

German defence contractor Rheinmetall has won a €5.7 billion contract with Romania, covering 298 Lynx infantry fighting vehicles, Skyranger air‑defence systems, ammunition and two naval patrol vessels. The order, signed under the EU SAFE programme, will be delivered between 2028 and 2030, and Rheinmetall plans to invest several hundred million euros in Romanian production capacity, creating thousands of jobs.

Separately, Russia has filed a lawsuit demanding more than €47 million from Rheinmetall for a cancelled training‑centre project near Mulino. The claim stems from a 2011 cooperation agreement that was halted after Germany blocked defence exports to Russia following the 2014 annexation of Crimea. The case is being heard before a Moscow arbitration court, but experts say any Russian judgment would be difficult to enforce in Europe.
