Rhineland‑Palatinate Launches Major Bridge Replacement Programme
The state government of Rhineland‑Palatinate announced that it will prioritise the construction of new road bridges to replace structurally compromised ones, aiming to improve traffic safety. About 5,700 bridges on federal, state and county roads fall under the responsibility of the Landesbetrieb Mobilität, which inspects each bridge at least every three years. The minister for transport, Achim Schwickert, said future projects will focus on complete replacement rather than repair, and that full road closures cannot be ruled out during the extensive construction work.
To accelerate planning and implementation, the administration will fill vacant positions within the mobility agency, standardise procedures and streamline coordination between road‑building authorities and approval bodies. The move is expected to affect motorists across the state as many bridge projects may require temporary closures.
