Rhinogydd wildfire spreads across Snowdonia, threatening protected areas

A wildfire that was first reported on 12 July has continued to blaze in the Rhinogydd mountains of Snowdonia, Wales. The blaze is estimated to have covered around 2,000 acres of mountainous terrain, making large parts of the area inaccessible by vehicle or on foot.

The fire, fed by strong winds that have shifted direction, has moved across Cwm Bychan, the Fferm Cwm yr Afon valley and the slopes of Rhinog Fawr, forcing the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service to work with Natural Resources Wales to reinforce firebreaks. Residents such as Haf Meredydd of Llanfair have reported a persistent smell of smoke and dense, smoky haze. The area includes sites designated as Special Areas of Conservation, Sites of Special Scientific Interest and a National Nature Reserve, raising concerns about potential damage to protected habitats.

Fire crews warn that the fire could intensify further overnight as temperatures drop, especially in low‑lying areas where smoke can accumulate. Continued monitoring and containment efforts are underway.
