UK heatwave fuels Wales and Scotland wildfires

Overview

By July 25 2026 the fourth heatwave continued to dominate the UK, with Met Office forecasts calling for 35‑39 °C across England – including a peak of 39 °C in the east on July 29 – and more than 20 million people still under hose‑pipe bans. Drought declarations remain in force in North Wales and the Upper Severn.

In Scotland, the Cairngorms fire remains a major incident; evacuation of Nethy Bridge and deployment of over 500 firefighters and helicopter water‑bombers continue, and military assistance is still being coordinated.

In Wales, the two large blazes on Maerdy mountain and in Blaenavon persist, while additional hill fires have erupted across Powys, affecting the Rhinogydd, Blaenavon and Hanter Hill near Presteigne. Crews from Newtown, Presteigne and other stations have been rotating on the incidents; the Hanter Hill fire has been “massively reduced” but hotspots are still being monitored. Multi‑agency resources, specialist 4×4s, drones, i‑cutters, and water‑bowser units remain on alert as brief rain showers provide only temporary relief and the high‑pressure system is expected to keep conditions hot and dry through the week.
