Riau Governor Abdul Wahid faces 8.5‑year prison term and half‑billion rupiah fine

Indonesia's Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) prosecutor Meyer Volmar Simanjuntak urged the Pekanbaru District Court to sentence former Riau governor Abdul Wahid to eight years and six months in prison and impose a fine of 500 million rupiah. The court was also asked to order Wahid to pay compensation of 1.45 billion rupiah, with further imprisonment if the amount is not paid.

The case concerns an extortion scheme in which Wahid allegedly forced heads of technical units within the provincial Public Works and Housing department to contribute a fixed 5 % of their project budgets—totaling around 7 billion rupiah—under threat of withholding budget approvals or transferring their positions. The alleged misconduct was uncovered during a KPK raid on 3 November 2025 that led to Wahid’s arrest along with two other suspects, expert Dani M. Nursalam and former provincial works head M. Arif Setiawan.
