Ribota de Sajambre wildfire stays at level 2 as flames threaten nearby towns
The forest fire near Ribota de Sajambre in the León province of Castile and León remains at level 2 on the Potential Gravity Index. Authorities say the situation has improved but the blaze is still active, especially on its north‑west front, keeping nearby villages at risk.
Firefighters have deployed about 70 ground personnel, seven helicopters and a coordination aircraft, while also working with teams from neighboring Asturias to secure the perimeter. The fire, likely sparked by lightning on 26 June, has caused temporary road closures on the N‑625 due to landslides from suppression activities and has prompted a preventive confinement of roughly 20 residents, which was lifted as conditions improved. Continued high temperatures, wind and the area's rugged terrain complicate containment efforts.
Officials stress that the level‑2 rating will be maintained until fire activity can be fully monitored and the risk to surrounding settlements and infrastructure is reduced.
