Ricardo Couto proposes increasing STF entry age to 60
Ricardo Couto, the acting governor of Rio de Janeiro, has expressed opposition to the implementation of fixed terms for ministers of the Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF). Instead, he proposed increasing the minimum age for entry into the court to 60 years.
Couto argued that a higher age requirement would ensure that appointees possess greater legal expertise and established professional experience. He expressed concern that fixed mandates could lead to conflicts of interest, suggesting that younger ministers might transition into high-profile law firms immediately after their terms end.
Additionally, Couto commented on judicial proceedings involving magistrates, suggesting that initial investigations should often be conducted under seal to prevent matters from gaining disproportionate public exposure before they are resolved internally.
