Rice producers in Dominican Republic and Panama face distinct challenges
In the Dominican Republic, the Association of Merchants and Industrials of Santiago (ACIS) has warned that the implementation of tariff liberalization for rice could severely impact national producers. ACIS President Marcos Santana stated that the move threatens an industry supporting approximately 330,000 families and over 30,000 producers. The organization is calling for government intervention and transparent public policies to compensate local farmers for the disadvantages faced against foreign competition.
In Panama, the Federation of Associations of Rice and Grain Producers (Fapagrap) has ruled out price increases following a recent earthquake. Technical evaluations from Darién to Chiriquí indicate that rice fields remain in excellent condition. While a minor sea-level rise caused salt-water damage to approximately 6 to 7 hectares in the Tonosí valley, the overall impact is considered negligible. However, logistical bottlenecks caused by cracks and partial collapses in key bridges are currently complicating the transport of grains to mills.
