Richard Hughes joins Al-Hilal after departing Liverpool

Richard Hughes has officially stepped down as the sporting director of Liverpool FC to join the Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal. Hughes, who joined Liverpool from Bournemouth in 2024, oversaw a period of significant transition, including the appointment of manager Arne Slot and high-profile recruitment. His departure follows the conclusion of the summer transfer window.

Al-Hilal has confirmed the appointment of Hughes as its new sporting director, a move intended to enhance the club's technical operations, recruitment, and scouting processes. Hughes arrives in Riyadh to lead a specialized team that includes Simon Francis, Marc Birchall, Craig Mackie, and Harry Artar.

Liverpool is currently assessing candidates to fill the vacancy. Potential internal successors being considered include former sporting director Julian Ward, assistant sporting director David Woodfine, and director of football development Pedro Marques.
