Rigathi Gachagua urges opposition to focus on mobilization over 2027 candidate selection

Rigathi Gachagua, leader of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), has advised the opposition against rushing to select a presidential candidate for the 2027 General Election. Speaking at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, Gachagua argued that the coalition should prioritize political mobilization, voter registration, and building a strong base to challenge President William Ruto rather than focusing on a single candidate. He cited the 2002 election, where Mwai Kibaki was selected only weeks before the vote, as evidence that a candidate can be chosen late in the process.

Gachagua is traveling to the United States for an extended period to meet with the Kenyan diaspora and to rest. His itinerary includes stops in Washington, Oregon, Kansas, Texas, and Massachusetts. He stated that the time away would allow him to reflect and make political decisions away from the influence of his local associates.
