Rimavská Sobota faces expanding hepatitis A outbreak

Health authorities in Slovakia are responding to an expanding outbreak of hepatitis A in the Rimavská Sobota district. Adriana Strečková, head of epidemiology at the Regional Public Health Authority, reported 48 confirmed cases within the town of Rimavská Sobota alone. Of these, 34 cases are linked to an initial outbreak at the Dúžavská cesta settlement that began on July 22.

The outbreak has spread beyond the town, with active clusters identified in 12 surrounding municipalities. The largest concentration of cases is in Rimavská Seč, which has recorded 38 cases since May. Other affected areas include Barca, Chrámec, Vlkyňa, Štrkovec, Janice, Valice, Žíp, Kesovce, Ožďany, Chanava, and Dubovec. Additionally, two cases were reported in Gemer within the Revúca district.

To contain the spread, hygienists have implemented preventive measures, including medical supervision, the immunization of contacts, and environmental disinfection in infection hotspots.
