Infectious disease outbreaks in Central and Eastern Europe
Overview
Public health reports from Central and Eastern Europe indicate ongoing infectious disease outbreaks, with a significant focus on Hepatitis A.
In Romania’s Szatmár County, 83 cases were reported in August, with Hepatitis A accounting for 59 of those infections. Other reported illnesses included rotavirus, salmonellosis, leptospirosis, campylobacteriosis, and various other forms of hepatitis. Authorities have conducted epidemiological investigations and implemented vaccination measures.
In Hungary, health officials identified a case of Dengue fever in Hajdú-Bihar county, linked to a 19-year-old Bangladeshi national who contracted the virus abroad. The country also reported community gastroenteritis outbreaks in Békés and Baranya counties, alongside instances of campylobacteriosis and Hepatitis A in Hajdú-Bihar.
In Slovakia, the Hepatitis A situation has expanded. Following earlier outbreaks in the Rimavská Sobota district, a sudden spike was reported in the Lučenec district. The village of Čakanovce has emerged as a focal point, accounting for 20 of 22 new confirmed cases over a 14-day period. Response measures include mandatory vaccination for close contacts, 50-day medical supervision, and deep disinfection.
In the Czech Republic, cases in the South Moravian region have risen again as of September. Since the start of the year, 502 cases have been recorded in the region, centered around Brno. Officials noted that approximately one-third of those infected are unemployed or homeless. Preventive efforts include emphasizing vaccination for food service workers and improving hygiene in transit hubs.
