Rincón de la Vieja volcano records 20 eruptions in Costa Rica

The Rincón de la Vieja volcano in Costa Rica has exhibited intense activity, recording at least 20 eruptions between Friday and Tuesday morning, September 1. Vulcanologist Geoffroy Avard from the Volcanological and Seismological Observatory (Ovsicori) reported that eight of these events possessed sufficient energy to potentially generate lahars.

The most energetic eruption of the year occurred on Monday at 4:37 p.m., producing a plume that reached approximately 2,000 meters and generating lahars confirmed by residents in the Penjamo River. Ongoing monitoring shows increased tremor amplitude and high sulfur dioxide (SO2) gas flows. The volcano remains at a caution activity level (3).
