CET-Rio launches community-led school safety program
CET-Rio has launched a new phase of its 'A Caminho da Escola 3.0' program in Rio de Janeiro. The initiative aims to transition temporary traffic safety measures into permanent urban interventions by involving the local community in the decision-making process.
During pilot activities in Campo Grande, specifically at the Tóquio and Ministro Alcides Carneiro municipal schools, residents, students, and teachers participated in workshops and cultural events to suggest improvements such as new sidewalks, raised crossings, and parking areas. The program utilizes tactical urbanism—a low-cost, rapid-implementation method using pavement painting and bollards to enhance public space safety.
In a separate local initiative in Indaiatuba, the municipal education department and the Military Firefighters conducted a graduation ceremony for the 'Bombeiro na Escola' program. Fourth-grade students received training in first aid, fire prevention, and emergency response to foster a culture of safety and citizenship.
